Erastil is a decent god. Lord Kavken, he is a priest of this god. It is silly, I think, to have an animal for a head. When you are the god of hunting and sport and things, it is a strange choice. Gods, good strong gods, take what form they please. Erastil, he is a decent god. I think he could choose something less silly.
But Lord Kavken, he is a priest of this god. So, he is a good god. It is years now I have known Lord Kavken. I was a different sort of man years ago. Revenge, it is like poison. It tells you to do things no good man would permit. And you like these things. I went south to kill Thenn. I was good at this. I killed many, many men. Some women. Some children. Not many. Let the sons grow to men. Let them come for me, I thought. Revenge, it breeds this way.
But Lord Kavken, he is a good man. A patient man. This is why he took up the mantle left by the Bastard. The Bastard, he said, wanted to build a city in the name of some other god. But the Bastard was misguided. Lord Kavken knew that the Stolen Lands would not be tamed. But, he believed there could be peace there. Lord Kavken is a man of peace. Like many men of peace, he has killed many. Like me, he has killed his kin. But no more.
We would speak long nights at Oleg’s. Lord Kavken would quote his holy books. Erastil, he is a good god because he speaks little. Gods, good strong gods, they act. Apsu spilled his blood and the fire of creation spilled across the world. This is a god! Erastil, he does not speak much. This is good. Lord Kavken was fond of one chapter in particular, On Family. Once he said to me: “The first gift you ever receive is your family. A man grows from the seeds his parents plant.” This was wisdom. This made me think: would my mother, would my father kill all these men? Yes. But, would they revel in it? No. Never. Revenge is a poor fruit. It shames the tree.
So, Erastil he is a decent god. But Lord Kavken, he is a good man. So if a silly deer head is good enough for him, then it is a good enough god.
